- Prune in the winter when the plant is dormant. After it has lost all its leaves in the autumn, and before the new leaves come in the spring!
- Cut branches that are more than 4 years old. Currants fruit on branches that are 2 years and older, but after 4-5 years the fruit production goes down.
- Leave 8-12 main, healthy branches standing. Otherwise it’s too cluttered.
- Prune in an open goblet shape, with all branches around the outside and a hole in the middle to allow air and light to flow through.
- Trim all branches that rub against each other. Look for branches that are dead or damages, and cut them.
- As the last step, cut all remaining stems shorter by about a third, just above one of the little buds.
